About A Bold Fresh Piece of Humanity - Book Description

The year was 1957, the month September, and I had just turned eight years old. Dwight Eisenhower was President, but in my life it was the diminutive, intense Sister Mary Lurana who ruled, at least in the third-grade class where I was held captive. For reasons you will soon understand, my parents had remanded me to the penal institution of St. Brigid’s School in Westbury, New York, a cruel and unusual punishment if there ever was one.

Already, I had barely survived my first two years at St. Brigid’s because I was, well, a little nitwit. Not satisfied with memorizing the Baltimore Catechism’s fine prose, which featured passages like “God made me to show his goodness and to make me happy with him in heaven,” I was constantly annoying my classmates and, of course, the no-nonsense Sister Lurana. With sixty overactive students in her class, she was understandably short on patience. For survival, she had also become quick on the draw.

Then it happened. One day I blurted out some dumb remark, and Sister Lurana was on me like a panther. Her black habit blocked out all distractions as she leaned down, looked me in the eye, and uttered words I have never forgotten: “William, you are a bold, fresh piece of humanity.”

And she was dead-on.One day in 1957, in the third-grade classroom of St. Brigid’s parochial school, an exasperated Sister Mary Lurana bent over a restless young William O’Reilly and said, “William, you are a bold, fresh piece of humanity.” Little did she know that she was, early in his career as a troublemaker, defining the essence of Bill O’Reilly and providing him with the title of his brash and entertaining issues-based memoir.

And this time it’s personal. In his most intimate book yet, O’Reilly goes back in time to examine the people, places, and experiences that launched him on his journey from working-class kid to immensely influential television personality and bestselling author. Readers will learn how his traditional outlook was formed in the crucible of his family, his neighborhood, his church, and his schools, and how his views on America’s proper role in the world emerged from covering four wars on five continents over three-plus decades as a news correspondent. What will delight his numerous fans and surprise many others is the humor and self-deprecation with which he handles one of his core subjects: himself, and just how O’Reilly became O’Reilly.

Although I am open minded and occassionally watch 'The O'Reily Factor'. His facts are just too bias and resemble lies more than facts in this book. It is extremism at it's worst. I would even urge staunch conservatives to stay away from this book.

I bought this book hoping for the inside scoop on how he sexually harassed and then later attempted to publicly embarrassed his secretary but sadly just more self serving nonsense from Bill, bummer!

I am really surprised by many of these reviews. I can't imagine coughing up the bucks to read a book written by a person I really didn't like; its clear that some of these reviewers really didn't like Bill, even before reading the book.

One the other hand, I'm a lot like the reviewer, Doherty, without his personal experience with Bill- totally fascinated by this guy. When I first starting watching his show, his anger put me off some nights but over time, he's won me over, mostly because I truly believe that he is committed to fair and accurate reporting and that he has a deep concern for the "folks" of America.

This book is charming in many ways, and reveals a lot about Bill's parochial school upbringing, his parents and his place in their family. I think he takes a light look at some matters of upbringing that shaped his demeanor and outlook, but again I feel that he's a loyal guy not given to criticizing family or church.

His sense of his own importance comes out on some pages in this book, and I don't say that as a criticism; that's just part of who he is. He's got the most popular News show on national cable TV for the last 7 years. In his shoes, I might take myself a bit seriously some days.

For those as fascinated as I am with Bill O'Reilly, this book shares stories from his past that will warm your heart and some that will make you wonder how he turned out so well. This well-written book reveals a lot of who Bill is and why. It's a truly enjoyable book about a fascinating guy !

The one-star reviews must be pre-boomers, because I found the book entertaining to those of us who came of age in the 60s and 70s; so what if the guy has an ego? He deserves it, given his upbringing and sense of family. Much of his humor is self-deprecating; so he fights for the the "little guys and gals?" This was meant to be a memoir (Get It?), not a political commentary; Bill has three hours daily devoted to that; he wanted the public to see how his values were formed; his loyalty to family and friends is commendable; he doesn't forget "those who brung (sic) us," which is a famous Darrel Royal quote when playing James Street in the title game against Notre Dame on January 1, 1970. Put aside your own biases and read the book for what it is--entertainment.
