About Dedication - Book Description

What if your ex was famous and adored by millions? What would you do if you had one chance to make him regret his entire existence? How much would you risk? Kate Hollis's ex-boyfriend's face plasters newsstands and TV, the Internet, and the multiplex. Jake Sharpe is one of the biggest recording stars on the planet, and every song he's famous for is about Kate. For over a decade his soundtrack has chased her -- from the gym to the supermarket, from the dentist's office to the bars. Now thirty-year-old Kate gets the call that Jake has finally landed back in their Vermont hometown for an MTV special. The moment she has been waiting for has arrived. On the eve of their prom, Jake Sharpe vanished, resurfacing when his song "Losing" -- about his and Kate's first sexual experience -- shot to the top of the Billboard charts. And the hits kept coming, each more personal than the one before. Now Kate gets her chance to confront Jake and reclaim her past. But after eleven years of enduring protracted and far-from-private heartbreak, everyone in Kate's life has a stake in how this plays out. Kate must risk betraying the friends Jake abandoned, the bandmates whose songs he plundered, and her own parents, who fear this will dredge up a shared past more painful than any of them want to acknowledge. But after getting the call in the dead of night and jumping on a plane, can she turn back now? Newsweek dubbed The Nanny Diaries "a national phenomenon" and the New Republic proclaimed, "Thank God for Citizen Girl." Now McLaughlin and Kraus have written a poignant, humorous tale about modern celebrity obsession and coming of age during the divorce boom. With flawless depictions of the 1980s, a charismatic heroine, and their signature biting wit, the authors offer up another lively and hilarious tale of a smart young woman looking for satisfaction in the chaos of contemporary culture.

Like all the others have written - the back and forth with past (80s) and present (2005) from chapter to chapter is definitely not a huge success. Too often, you have to read many chapters ahead to understand comments/incidents from previous chapters. It becomes a page turner because you want to understand more and more, however, you will be dissapointed and feel no real pay off by the rushed ending.

The story had so much promise. Like other posters I kept waiting for all the buildup to result in some fabulous ending but there was just this mad downhill rush of stuff at the end that was completely disjointed from the rest of the story and simply didn't ring true. As another person wrote, there was a complete lack of information regarding the characters and the whole thing was extremely superficial. Thank goodness I got this as a gift and didn't have to pay for it.

Truly loved the beginning of the story... thought it had a great plot line. Once the author started to give flashbacks of the main character as a high schooler, I lost interest. It just wasn't what I thought it was going to be. I was expecting it to reach a slightly older crowd. Not a bad story line, I just didn't like the delivery and just lost interest.

I picked the book up because of being a fan of songs like "Hey There Delilah" and Maroon 5's "Songs About Jane", I thought it would be fun to see what life is like as the muse for famous rock stars. As a 31-year-old, it felt like a ride through my adolescence in the '80s and '90s with lots of "I remember that!". I'm not getting the negative reviews because I think the structure of the book lent itself well to the building of the relationship as teens. We see why Kate fell in love with Jake despite his quirks, it was slow-building, poignant, and tender rather than just crazy lust that would have made Jake easy to forget. The past/present style also contributed to the anticipation of "The Moment" when Kate and Jake are reunited. A very good mix of heart and soul, unconditional friendship and loyalty, and a healthy dose of family drama made this an unexpected, but worthwhile summer read.

I really liked this book. I admit it took some time to get into, but once you get passed the first few chapters, it starts to pick up speed. I really enjoyed the 80's and 90's references throughout the book as well since I was also in school at that time.

Katie/Kate had a crush on Jake since the 6th grade. They finally become a couple in high school - each other's first true loves. I think most women can relate that their first true love (especially if it was in high school) holds a special place in their heart. Jake leaves town without telling any of his friends (the members of his band) or the love of his life, Katie. In fact, he stands her up for the senior prom. Thirteen years later Kate has the opportunity to get revenge on Jake when he returns to their hometown for a MTV special. There are definitely still sparks between the two and what happens next may surprise you. In the end, Kate makes her choice and the reader also gets to see how the beginning came to be.

Definitely worth reading, but take your time. Don't try to rush through it.

This is a cute book and a good fast read. It doesn't have a lot of "substance" but is good brain candy. Good plot and characters and some GREAT descriptions of being a middleschooler in the 80s.
