I hardly ever eat veggies since I don't really know how to fix them, so this book is really a good option to people like me. You fix your favorite dish and then add one of these purees, so you make a regular meal, a very healthy one. I should also mention, her recipes aren't time consuming (around 30 min.) so regardles of who came out with the idea first, this is for sure a good option.
The book makes every aspect of cooking approachable and do-able. I bought this book hoping I could figure out on my own how to steam veggies (never done it before, have no clue) and puree them (never used my food processor once in the 7 yrs I've had it) in order to use the recipes in this book, but I didn't have to!
This book gives STEP BY STEP instructions on how to prepare each individual vegetable and fruit, how to cook the veggies (steaming, microwaving, roasting, etc) as well as how to puree them! What a life saver! Everything has been very easy to understand. It's a great guide as far as this stuff is concerned.
She tells you which tools and appliances you'll want to have around your kitchen, and which foods and spices are handy to have. And not only that, there are great recipes too! The recipes are easy to do and sound delicious and kid friendly. I can't wait to try most of them.
And what's more, the book is styled in a cute retro 1950s look. I love the pages that show kitchen items like pots and pans and rice steamers. With all the retro fonts, colors, and illustrations, you'd think this was a vintage cookbook from 1956. And the photography is great. Almost every recipe has its own photo, which is nice. I always like to see what I'm making is going to look like.
Regardless of the whole "Sneaky Chef" thing, I really really like this cookbook. It had exceeded my expectations. I have some butternut squash roasting in the oven right now, with my food processor sitting at the ready. :)
My 3 year old LOVES fruits and veggies. I didn't get this book to be sneaky, I bought it because I am looking for new ways go get veggies to the table as something other than a plain side dish. So, I am not realy 'deceptive' when I tell him what is in it. I have some positive and some negative things to say...
Negative Points:
- EXPENSIVE! I think that all veggies are that way, so I don't suppose it is the books fault on that.
- Time consuming and messy! It really takes a long time to puree the food. And it makes a big mess. The few recipes I have tried also take a long time. If you do not have extra time or you are not willing to make some time, this book is not for you.
- Hard to find ingredients! I searched both grocery stores in my town and I can not find a lot of the ingredients. Especially flaxseed or whole wheat breadcrumbs. Of course I subsititue, but it is frustrating.
Positive Points:
+ A good way to add extra veggies to my family's plate!
+ Overall, I think the recipes taste good
+ I love at the back of the book how you can look up the puree you have and it will tell you what recipes you can make with it.
+ The directions in the front how to puree and cook the veggies are very helpful
+ I really like the chicken nuggets! My son and nephew do too, processed nuggets disgust me.
So overall if you have the time and money. Go for it!
