A New York real estate tycoon plunges to his death on a Manhattan sidewalk. A trophy wife with a past survives a narrow escape from a brazen attack. Mobsters and moguls with no shortage of reasons to kill trot out their alibis. And then, in the suffocating grip of a record heat wave, comes another shocking murder and a sharp turn in a tense journey into the dirty little secrets of the wealthy. Secrets that prove to be fatal. Secrets that lay hidden in the dark until one NYPD detective shines a light.
Mystery sensation Richard Castle, blockbuster author of the wildly best-selling Derrick Storm novels, introduces his newest character, NYPD Homicide Detective Nikki Heat. Tough, sexy, professional, Nikki Heat carries a passion for justice as she leads one of New York City's top homicide squads. She's hit with an unexpected challenge when the commissioner assigns superstar magazine journalist Jameson Rook to ride along with her to research an article on New York's Finest. PulitzerPrize-winning Rook is as much a handful as he is handsome. His wise-cracking and meddling aren't her only problems. As she works to unravel the secrets of the murdered real estate tycoon, she must also confront the spark between them. The one called heat.
While I was a little disappointed when the book arrived and it was only 198 pages long, I soon got over it. I loved the fact that I could really picture what Rook (Castle) and Heat (Beckett) looked like all through the book. It paralleled the show a lot, but I really liked that it did. I actually laughed out loud a couple of times and snickered a lot. That is my idea of a good book. I am going to wait patiently for the next book in the series.
I love the show Castle, so I was very excited to pick up this book -- and I wasn't let down. At first I wasn't so sure about the inclusion of the Castle-type character (with the not-so-subtle name of Rook), but eventually the parallel to the show grew on me. The title character Nikki Heat is a strong, independent woman who can really kick some butt, and she made a good protagonist. I loved the "action scenes" in the novel in particular, and thought they were very well-written. Any fan of Castle should definitely pick this up.
No, I don't watch Castle on TV. Not because I don't want to - I have class.
I AM drawn to the man who plays Richard Castle, and wish he would be a prolific writer and do the old tag-along with some of New York's finest and write about them. I'd buy every single one.
This tie-in to the TV series features Jameson Rook in the Castle role, and is partnered with a sexy, tough cop, Nikki Heat. Feeling she has to babysit a journalist instead of doing her job is a bother to her, but she deals with it.
Heat Wave deals with the brown outs that NYC deal with in the summer when there is such a pull on the energy source that little works, and is hothothot in the apartments, etc. It is also a wonderful chemical heat reaction between Heat and Rook. The combination of action dealing with a nasty Russian villian and the 'heat' between Nikki and Rook is a joy to read.
It's ok by me for them to keep writing these books based on the series - they are fun, sexy and have great chemistry of cops, as well as the romantic edge of Rook and Nikki.
I would pick up these books in a New York minute!
Great read and great tie-in.
