Rent: Need

By Carrie Jones

Overview & Description

Zara collects phobias the way other girls collect Facebook friends. Little wonder, since life’s been pretty rough so far. Her father left, her stepfather just died, and her mother’s pretty much checked out. Now Zara’s living with her grandmother in sleepy, cold Maine so that she stays “safe.” Zara doesn’t think she’s in danger; she thinks her mother can’t deal.

Wrong. Turns out that guy she sees everywhere, the one leaving trails of gold glitter, isn’t a figment of her imagination. He’s a pixie—and not the cute, lovable kind with wings. He’s the kind who has dreadful, uncontrollable needs. And he’s trailing Zara.

With suspense, romance, and paranormal themes, this exciting breakout novel has readers rapidly turning the pages.

George W. writes,

The main thing that attracts my attention is the title of the books.
When i started reading the first chapter i was hooked. It reminded me so much of Twilight, it isnt exactly like it and for that i am thankful but it was like it enough for me to like it automatically. i have never read any of carrie's book but if they are anything like Need i will.
Zara is a funny character that you cant help but like.
The fact that phobias was in the story line was a plus, sometimes a funy plus. and it makes you think everything has a name all fears do, well maybe not all...
i look forward to reading more of her books.

Carrie Jones's Need is a suspenseful page-turner that will chill you as much as a snowy night in Maine -- specifically, Bedford, Maine, where there's heaps more things to be chilled by than the weather. The setting is perfect, the numbing cold and isolation rivaled only by Zara, the death of her stepfather rattling her enough to convince her mother to send her to the sleepy smalltown in the first place, in hopes of sparking some life back in her. But someone is stalking her, leaving trails of golden dust, and boys are turning up missing. It doesn't take long for Zara and her friends to come up with who is behind it all -- or, more correctly, what: pixies.

This book is expertly plotted, dropping in hints and clues less conspicuous than golden dust until the book actually oozes with tension. It's a slow build, and once it picks up pace, the fantastical elements feel utterly believable and capable of occuring in everyday life. Even when you think you can predict how the story will turn out, Jones throws in a twist that makes Need more engrossing than it was before. The pixies are genuinely creepy, but Zara's engaging, quirky voice keeps you grounded. Chilling yet down to earth, Need leaves you hungry for a sequel not because of any dangling cliffhangers, but because the world and characters are so well-drawn that you'd even risk lethal pixies to revisit them again. If you clamor for a dash of horror and realism in your fantasy fiction, then Need is a must-read.

Zara has a little quirk. She likes to repeat phobias. And she knows a lot, including phobophobia-the fear of phobias. After her stepfather dies, she draws into herself. Her mother sends her to live with her grandmother in cold Maine so she can stay `safe.'

Zara doesn't care much for the sleepy Maine town. Then she starts noticing a strange man who watches her and calls out her name. There's other strange things that include missing boys and some secrets that no one will let her in on.

Zara finds out maybe repeating phobias won't help, especially when she finds out the stranger is a pixie who leaves gold dust and has an uncontrollable need that might involve her.

NEED is one of those novels that grabs you and won't let go. This urban fantasy is sure to appeal to fans of Cassandra Clair and Melissa Marr. Jones does a great job showing a spunky heroine who demands to know the truth even when this might reinforce another phobia--pixiophobia--fear of pixies.

I enjoyed this fast-paced tale where pixies live in our world but whose needs are high. Zara's quirk of repeating phobias gives her an added dimension as a character. I also enjoyed her interaction with Betty, her grandmother. Her romantic interest also has a surprise of his own. It seems nothing in this little Maine town is what it seems to be. But you'll have to grab a copy of this book to find out what's hidden behind the glamour. You won't be disappointed.

Carrie Jones lives with her cute family in Maine, but she grew up in Bedford, NH where she once had a séance with cool uber-comedian Sarah Silverman. She graduated from Vermont College's MFA program for writing. She has edited newspapers and poetry journals and has recently won awards from the Maine Press Association and also been awarded the Martin Dibner Fellowship as well as a Maine Literary Award.
