Rent: The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Book 1)

By Rick Riordan

Overview & Description

Percy Jackson is a good kid, but he can’t seem to focus on his schoolwork or control his temper. And lately, being away at boarding school is only getting worse—Percy could have sworn his pre-algebra teacher turned into a monster and tried to kill him. When Percy’s mom finds out, she knows it’s time that he knew the truth about where he came from, and that he go to the one place he’ll be safe. She sends Percy to Camp Half-Blood, a summer camp for demigods (on Long Island), where he learns that the father he never knew is Poseidon, God of the Sea. Soon a mystery unfolds and together with his friends—one a satyr and the other the demigod daughter of Athena—Percy sets out on a quest across the United States to reach the gates of the Underworld (located in a recording studio in Hollywood) and prevent a catastrophic war between the gods.

If you've finished Harry Potter and are at a loss for a new series, try this Rick Riordan series. It is excellent! You will learn much about mythology and be propelled along with these terrific characters through many exciting adventures. This is the kind of series that makes you impatient for the next book to arrive.

Ok..I love this book! I absolutely adore this book and I am now going to say this to y'all!: I read reviews almost every day for a lot of books. Today I came upon this book's reviews and I see all of these reviews that people are comparing The Lightening Thief to Harry Potter. This is ridiculous peeps! I mean come on ya little buttknuckles! Dont get me wrong I LOVE Harry Potter and it's one of my favorite books ever but..I mean if it's good when you're comparing HP and The Lightening Thief..then..good! But if you're saying that The Lightening Thief is a copy of HP just because of some minor things (Half-Blood Hill..People say it's like Hogwarts..Being a Demigod is like Half blood Harry Potter..Capture the Flag..Like Quidditch..The Satyr and Annabeth like Ron and Hermoine!)
I read these and was like Wow..So you're sayin, according to the Half-Blood Hill being "similar" to Hogwarts, If ANY book would say someone went to a camp, then they're copying Harry Potter? That's ridiculous! Being a Demigod..Is supposedly like being a half blood so they're copying Harry Potter? If I make a book about someone being Half-Cow would that be copying HP? They play Capture The Flag..So in Dora the Explorer they play a game..So they're copying Harry Potter?! No! dont think so folks! This is absolutely one of the most ridiculous things I have ever seen!
This book is absolutely wonderful! It's ORIGINAL..Using the Greek Gods..One of the best ideas and plots I've ever read in a book! I highly reccomend this book to all ages!

When I first read Riordan's The Lightning Thief, I was thrilled to find a book that is not only a great story but one that brings mythology to life. When I read the book out loud with a class of ten year old boys, not only did they want to read the sequel, but they began to make all kinds of connections and challenged themselves to read, read, read! When The Titan's Curse came out in May, we took an impromptu field trip to celebrate their success and are anxiously awaiting the fourth installment.
Another wonderful feature is that Percy Jackson is dyslexic, ADHD, and an unlikely hero, not unlike Harry Potter or even Anakin Skywalker.
